History
The GRM Story
Success is built on hard work and teamwork. This fundamental lesson was ingrained in GRM president and founder Garth Dietrick during his upbringing on a family farm in Saskatchewan. Growing up amidst 18 veterans of WWII and their families on a cooperative farm, Dietrick gained exposure to livestock, agriculture, and tradesmanship. Alongside his agricultural experiences, Dietrick discovered his passion for sports, particularly hockey. He pursued a hockey career, spanning Junior, University/College, and Professional levels in Europe, where he honed his teamwork skills and strategic thinking, traits that would later shape his business ventures.
Dietrick commenced his professional journey by joining a retail franchise as a franchisee and an invested shareholder. His marketing expertise and collaborative efforts in operations significantly contributed to the expansion of the franchise to over 200 locations across Canada.
Dietrick’s move to the Okanagan in 1989 marked the beginning of a unique business journey. Starting with a liquid lawn care business, he soon expanded to full property maintenance. This expansion allowed Dietrick to see the strengths and weaknesses of the traditional franchise model, leading to the development of GRM’s distinctive business model. This model emphasizes the power of collective resources while providing freedom for entrepreneurial branding and service offerings, a combination that sets GRM apart in the industry.
In 1991, Dietrick made a significant impact on the snow removal industry with his pioneering anti-ice initiatives in B.C. These initiatives not only improved safety standards but also demonstrated GRM’s commitment to innovation and leadership in the field.
In 2003, Dietrick incorporated GRM Inc. and initiated a series of educational seminars across Western Canada aimed at municipalities, cities, institutions, highway departments, and independent contractors. Within a short span, GRM emerged as a sought-after property maintenance company, serving prominent organizations such as BGIS, SNC Lavalin, Okanagan Strata Management, Kelowna Condos, UBC-Okanagan, Capri Mall, Orchard Park Mall, WSI, Telus, and Canada Post.
Today, GRM’s highly skilled teams serve businesses across Western Canada and the Northwest Territories. Their services span a wide range, from snow and ice management to property maintenance, landscaping, line painting, and asphalt, concrete, and sealants and coatings. This comprehensive range of services reflects GRM’s commitment to meeting diverse client needs and ensuring properties are well-maintained, safeguarding customers’ investments.
Reflecting on GRM’s journey, Garth Dietrick takes pride in the relationships forged within the company and with clients. “Our business model is unique, but our success truly stems from our relationships,” says Dietrick. “We take care of over 60 families directly within the GRM organization as well as over 800 family businesses in our preferred partner network, and that is our utmost priority.”
